Weather

Severe winters are here to stay. With North India reeling under cold wave Bali is facing spate of winds and cloudy days. Gusty draft from N blew at 13/26 km/hr. Students were seen clinging to their sweaters and prefered to remain in the closed class rooms. Sky was seen covered with cumulus clouds and weak sunlight. The School has registered maximum temperature at 18°C and minimum temperature at 11°C, dipping to its lowest in the night at 6°C. Humidity is now 18%.          

Service

Saturday, 20th December 2014: Escorted by Mr. Surendra Singh, Ms. Ritu Rajpurohit, Class XI went to distribute clothes to the tribal people of Bijapur. The whole school contributed enthusiastically. They returned heavy hearted but relieved that they could be of help in a small way to the needy as they saw a pitiful sight with naked tribal children shivering in the cold. Our thanks to Ms. Neha Vijaywargi (Mr. and Mrs. Vijawargi’s daughter) to volunteer to escort students for this social cause.

Ed: When did you join the school?
P.R: I joined in February 2006.

Ed: How did you come to know about The Fabindia School?
P.R: I had heard about the school as I am a local from Bali. I was called to teach mathematics as there was a vacancy for mathematics teacher.

Ed: How did you find the school at that time?
P.R: O, there were less number of students and there were fewer facilities compared to present. There were less computers, very less number of co-curricular activities were held. Discipline and punctuality among the teachers and the students was not so strictly followed. Tar road had not been constructed which leads to the school today. At that time there was no separate toilet for the girls also as they exist now.

Ed: When was the separate toilet constructed for girls?
P.R: They were constructed by Puntney Group in 2008.

Ed: Who was the Principal of the school at that time?
P.R: Mr. Jayant Biswas was the Principal of the School. He loved students and teachers. He was known for his punctuality and discipline the most.

Ed: What were the sports facilities in the School during that time?
P.R: Not so good though students got opportunities to play then also!

Ed: What changes would you like to see in the School.
P.R: The school needs to be disciplined. We need to have more qualified teachers. I know it is difficult to get in rural areas but then we are here to give good education! I think there should be an auditorium, sport complex, teachers should train the students in skills.

Ed: What are your qualifications Ma’am?
P.R: I am B.Sc, B.Ed. I have done my B.Sc from Pune.

Saturday, 20th December: For the first time two girls Shraddha Kansara/XII and Khushboo Punmiya/XII participated in the Inter School Debate Competition hosted by K. S. Lodha School, Falna. The topic of the competition was “Should Social Networking Sites be banned”. Thirteen CBSE. Schools from Jodhpur, Udaipur and schools from the surrounding areas participated in the competition. The winning teams were from Jodhpur and Udaipur. Girls felt recharged on returning as though they hadn’t won but it was a rewarding experience to know how a debate should be spoken!

Card making activity was carried out in many senior classes. The students made beautiful cards for Christmas and New Year for their teachers.

A Point to Debate
25 days ago our school received an invitation to participate in an Inter School English Debate Competition organized by K. S. Lodha Public School and sponsored by Flair Pens Ltd. Mumbai.
The Chief Guests were Mr. Arun Choudhary, Brigadier General Karan Singh Chouhan and the Judges were Lecturer Vinod Soni and Lecturer Selly Menon.

From our school we both participated and the topic was Social Networking Sites Must Be Banned. Keeping in mind how social networking sites have consumed today’s youths’ energy I think it was a most fought upon topic!

The teams came from faraway places like Jodhpur, Udaipur and surrounding areas of Falna. In all there were 13 participating schools to debate upon this topic. The competition was very tough and all the competitors were commendable as they performed with very relevant points for the house to decide upon.

There was a lot of drama and action in everyone’s delivery! Tone and expression were so clear that it seemed they owned certain sites themselves! There were no questions and queries during the delivery. We simply had to present our points and convince the audience and the judges.  It was our first time to go for an Inter School Debate and we were the luckiest ones to represent our school.
In all it was a great experience of our school life! We learnt many new things like how to write one’s own debate than to use someone else’s points; how to use a tone to convince the audience; how to look into each audience’s eye and talk to judges as if to say it mattered to you! This experience will help us in our future.

We tried our best and we were satisfied with the result as winning is not the part of every competition, participating is also a big thing and participating in front of a large crowd is not everyone’s CUP OF TEA. All the participants were appreciated by a certificate, set of Flair pens along with a memento for school and the winners were awarded with cash prize. Team effort of two schools was appreciated by two marvelous looking trophies. Overall the experience was great and unforgettable and we thank our school for giving us such a wonderful opportunity.

Saturday, 20th December: Saturday PT was taken up by Mr. Surendra Singh organized. Kushagra Singh/XI and Vaishali Rao/XI led the School.

Studies

Monday, 15th December to Saturday 20th December: Evaluation 4 and 5 started for Class I to V. A number of activities, projects and creative writing were carried out to evaluate students. For the whole week FA III was conducted for Class VI to X. Pre-primary Classes finished their Terminals Exams.

Tuesday, 16th December: Tuesday was a normal day. Nothing special happened but the only thing which was a cause of concern was the severe cold. Mr. Suresh Negi gave an activity to the students of class V B. Mr. Ajay Vijaywargi decided to have the lunch of all students of class X B together.

Thursday, 18th December: Another round of questioning took place on the monthly theme “Health and Sports”. Manvendra Sonigara/IX asked questions on sports.

Saturday, 20th December: Global Science Olympiad was organized in the school. Sixteen students of Class IX, VIII and IV participated in the Olympiad.

The School will close for Winter Vacations from 24th December to 3rd January, 2015. We will be back with more news and views on 12th January 2015, till

Bali is turning cold by the day! Hail storms and sudden showers in the Northern Rajasthan has brought chilly winds to Bali with very weak sunlight. The School has registered Minimum Temperature at 7°C and Maximum at 18°C. Humidity has fallen down by 2°C, it is now 16%.

A.G: My name is Angela De Giacomo. I am from Germany.

Ed: In which year you first visit Fabindia School?
A.G: My first visit to the Fabindia School was in 2012. I came to know about the school from Mr. William Bissell the Co-founder of this school.

Ed: When did you first meet Mr. William Bissell?
A.G: I met Mr. William Bissell in a Diwali Party in Delhi when I was on a business trip.

Ed: In, which profession are you in?
A.G: I am C.A in Germany. I look after the personal investments for Mr. William Bissell in helping other companies to grow.

Ed: What changes have you seen in Fabindia School from 2012 to 2014?
A.G: It is nice that now the school is clean and all the students of the school have started conversing well in English and now they are able to understand it.

Ed: What is your husband doing?
A.G: My husband is a Chemistry teacher in Germany. He also taught Chemistry in The Fabindia School as a volunteer teacher in the year.2012.

Ed: Now, what changes you want to see in the Fabindia School today?
A.G: Everything is good but I think that Girl students should be more than the boys because the school is providing many facilities and scholarship to the Girl students.

Ed: What do you say about Fedena?
A.G: Fedena is a software which is essential for all schools. It was made by a group of six of my friends from Kerela including myself. I want all the students and the teachers to use it individually. After they start using it I want you’ll to give me a feedback about what improvement do you want in it.

Ed: How often do you visit India?
A.G: I visit India every six months on a business trip.

Ed: Will your husband come and teach the students of The Fabindia School?
A.G: It is a good offer. We will think over it and come help you.

बाल  मज़दूरी
बाल मज़दूरी इस देश पर सबसे बड़ा खतरा है और बेरोज़गारी भारत की सबसे बड़ी और महत्वपूर्ण समस्या है। यह समस्या बहुत गंभीर हैं। स्थिति यह है कि दुनिया में असंख्य लोग अशिक्षित हैं। इसी कारण लोगों को रोजगार मिल नहीं पाता और इसी कारण लोग अपने बच्चों को पढ़ा नहीं पाते। भारत में  बहुत से लोग बेरोज़गारी के कारण अपनी संतान को विद्यालय नहीं भेज पाते और वे लोग दोषी हैं। वे लोग अपने बच्चों को काम पर भेज देते हैं पैसे कमाने के लिए। बाल मज़दूरी का एक कारण जनसंख्या वृद्धि है अगर इसे रोका जा सकता है तो हम 50 प्रतिशत इस बाल श्रम को रोक सकते हैं सरकार को कुछ बातों  पर ध्यान देना चाहिए जैसे  शिक्षा व्यवसाय केंद्रित हो, विद्यार्थियों को शिक्षा के साथ-साथ उचित परामर्श भी दिया जाए आदि आज बाल श्रम को रोकने को कई राजनैतिक दल आश्वासन  देते हैं पर कोई भी इस बात पर अमल नहीं करता बहुत से दल यह कहते है कि हम प्रत्येक व्यक्ति को रोजगार देंगे और यदि संभव न हुआ तो बेरोजगारी भत्ता देंगे जिससे  किसी भी व्यक्ति को अपने बच्चों को मज़दूरी करने न भेजना पड़े। वे आश्वासन देते है कि हम बाल मजदूरी रोक देंगे पर यह सब खत्म करने का किसी के सामर्थ्य में नहीं हैं। बालमजदूरी एक अभिशाप है। यह हमारी समाज की विडंबना को दर्शाता हैं। यह हमारी समाज की नींव को खोखला कर देती हैं। यह हमारी सामाजिक असमानता को दर्शाता है। ग़रीब बच्चों को कई विषम परिस्थितियों  में काम पर जाना पड़ता हैं। कुछ बच्चों के माता पिता निर्धन होते हैं इस कारण बच्चों को धन कमाने के लिए विवश होना पड़ता हैं। अनुकूल परिस्थितियाँ होने के कारण बच्चे सुविधा और मनोरंजन से वंचित रहते हैं। समाज़ और सरकार को इस विषय के प्रति जागरूक करना  होगा। अतः हमें इनका बचपन छीनने और उनके उमंग और उल्लास को निराशा में बदलने से रोकना होगा जब  देश से बाल श्रम खत्म हो जाएगा तब इस देश का भविष्य उज्ज्वल होगा।

Tuesday, 9th December: The School is following ‘Sports and Health’ as this month’s theme. The objective of the monthly theme is to teach the students important life lessons; how to reduce chronic health conditions including teamwork, patience and discipline. Students also learn the value of friendship, cooperation and respect through games and activities. Students of Class VII spoke on sports and health in the Assembly during the week.

Saloni Rajpurohit/II C: told the students about her favorite game “Basketball”

Pushpa Choudhary/II C: introduced her favourite game “Football”

Gaurav Rajpurohit/VIII B and Chandresh Choudhary/VIII B: quizzed the assembly.

A Class Activity was conducted by Class VIII B in which they played two games involving  physical activities. First the class was divided into two groups. Each player of the group was blind folded and had to reach the goal with the instructions given by their team. When they reached the point they had to kick the ball and make a goal. Team 2nd won the game.  In get another game, they had a team inside a circle and another outside. The outer team had to hit their opponent team. Team 1st won the game as they completed their task in 4 minutes and 38 seconds. These games not only involved physical activity but also helped the students to learn the value of cooperation, teamwork and discipline.

Saturday, 13th December: Mr. Dinesh Bharti  spoke on the serious problem  of Child Labor. He spoke about the two persons Kailash Satyarthi and Yusuf Malala, who have won the Nobel Prize for peace and are working for the upliftment of children. Since temperature has suddenly dipped he also requested students to donate woolens so that school Social Service League members could go to slums and distribute these wollens to the poor and save children from this cold weather.

Due to excessive cold, Mr. Surender got the whole School to do PT exercise after Assembly. Kushagra Singh/XI and Vaishali Rao/XI led the whole School into warm up exercises for 15 minutes, after which all went to their respective classes.

Observing the Sports and Health Week, Class VII B and VIII B organized an activity to bring awareness of the importance of eating healthy food. So the students made Fruit Chat in their respective classes. They served the staff and shared with the other classes too.

Studies

Monday, 8th December: DEAR program was conducted as usual in all the classes. All the regular lessons were held.

Wednesday, 10th December: A Special Assembly was organized on the occasion of World Human Right’s Day. Mr. Byju Joseph and Mr. Dinesh Bharti spoke at length on Human Rights, to bring awareness among students and how to use their rights in the correct manner without manipulating anyone else.

Campus Survey

ERRATTUM:  Misprinted the news on 1st December that Class XII had made 88 runs with the loss of 8 wickets and Class XII had made 89 runs with the of 5 wickets. Class XI, X and IX won the match with 5 wickets in there hand. They scored 89 runs with the loss of 5 wickets. Apologies!

Winter has at last set its foot in Bali. The sky was partially covered with the stratus clouds. The chill in the air is felt only in the morning and evening. Days are sunny. The School’s instruments recorded the minimum temperature @ 5°C and maximum @ 16°C. The temperature has fallen down by 3°C. The humidity was @ 16%.

Katherine Allen’s Interview

Ed: What inspired you to do this social service?
K.A: During university in 3rd year, I studied in Nepal and after that I went to Kolkata with my university professor for nine months and I travelled in India like Delhi, Varanasi, Rajasthan between 1992 and 1993. The same year I visited Rajasthan and saw the conditions of the girl child. In 1995 when I first visited the school, I saw that there were less girls studying in the school. This inspired me to do something about it. After that I joined the JBSF and helped William Bissell to raise funds for the school. In this way I started helping in raising the funds for Girls Scholars.  

Ed: When did the JBSF start?
K.A: The JBSF started in 1998 after Mr. John Bissell passed. We wanted to do something for Sir John Bissell, and took up the idea to help the girl child here, in Bali. So we formed the JBSF. We went to Mr. Bissell’s relatives and asked them to contribute. We wrote letters and asked them to raise money to help  the girl child and do the best.

Ed: When did you join The Fabindia School?
K.A: In 2005, I started working for the school.

Ed: How often do you visit the School?
K.A: I have visited The Fabindia School four times. First time in 1995, second in 2007, third in 2012 and now in 2014.

Ed: What changes have you seen  in the school?
K.A: I think the students love the school. Teachers are learning how to become better. If teachers develop, then the students will also develop. Though I have seen that children are happy here. They have improved and learnt to speak in English.

Ed: What do you want the school to focus on?
K.A: I want everyone to understand the Scholarship Program. It’s not a government program, it is an individual program. Some service program should carry on and there should be more involvement of parents and awareness among the parents about Scholarship Program.

Ed: What is the criteria of the Scholarships you give?
K.A: The criteria for the Scholarship Program are:-

1. For family who cannot afford/ need base
2. According to merit in Academics
3. For faculty/ staff children
4. The girls who are getting scholarships should maintain minimum marks. If they fail, their scholarships will be cancelled.   

Ed: What is Give to Asia?
K.A: It’s  an NGO in America in San Fransisco. They are partners with BAT. Anybody in America, who wants to give donation can contribute in this NGO. This NGO with the help of  BAT  helps the other charitable organization to get donations to help the needy girl child, so that they can continue towards their studies and to study in good English Schools.

Ed: With how many students you started funding?
K.A: Originally girls fees was 50% of boys fee. Parents were encouraged to send their girl child to school. Then we switched to all Girl Scholars  who were studying from  Nursery to Class III. Then we decided that we will not give scholarship to all the girls because we saw that many of the parents can afford the fees. From now onwards only if the family cannot afford it; they should be a family who genuinely needs the scholarship because this is not a government program. So we cancelled the scholarships of the girls from Nursery to Class III and started giving scholarships to needy girls from Nursery to Class XII.

Monday, 1st December: Math Week was celebrated. A Special Assembly was held every day for students to speak about Mathematics. Khushboo Rajpurohit/XB spoke Math prayer; Harshita Dalawat/XA spoke about Ramanujan, on whose name the Math Society runs. Khushboo Rajpurohit/XA spoke about Pythagoras; Damini Chouhan/XA gave a short description on Aryabhatta and Apoorva Mathur/XA introduced the great mathematician Euclid.

World AIDS Day was celebrated in the School. In a Special Assembly Mr. Byju Joseph/AD (Academic Dean) spoke at length on HIV AIDS, to bring awareness among students. Vaishali Rao/XI and Mayur Singh Rathore/XI put batches on teachers and students, to depicting the importance and awareness of HIV AIDS.

Tuesday, 2nd December: In the Assembly, Class IX explained Geometrical shapes and theorems related to circles. They explained these concepts on a board and with the help of nails and rubber band.

Mr. Jackson Wagner our Exchange Teacher from Sacramento, was invited to share his experiences with teaching at The Fabindia School since October this year, at the Assembly. Mr. Jackson spoke how he likes Bali because the weather is so different from his country where it must be freezingly cold. He shared how he had never taught before and is discovering the skills of teaching while he is in class. Our special thanks to him for teaching Physics classes to Class XII.

The students of Class I and II had birthday celebrations on the stage. The birthday boys and girls brought cake and sweetmeats and celebrated their birthday together with their classmates. They had a party which was full of music and dance and they enjoyed a lot with their teachers and classmates.

Weather

Bali has experienced cumulus clouds and it is predicted that weather will only become cold further. Despite winds, clouds refuse to go. Days are sunny and quite warm whereas mornings and evenings a little cold. Weather vitals from school instruments: Highest temperature 19°C; lowest 10°C; humidity at 16%.

Skills

Monday, 24th November: All the students visited exhibitions, while teachers talked about models and information related to them.

The School Photography Club has been a big hit among the children at school, with over 100 students signing up as members. The Annual Day Photo Exhibition was a big success and it generated great enthusiasm among its guests and visitors too. The School so far has sold 10 of its works- all priced at Rs. 5000.00 (Rupees Five Thousand only). The School is happy to share the Photo Exhibition online, readers may please take their pic and order a print online facility. Readers may kindly note that we have not removed the sold photos, but have simply added SOLD with the caption, kindly do not buy these. All payments are to be made in Indian Rupees only to The Fabindia School.

The Annual Day Photo Exhibition - 2014.

Your contributions will help us build the Photo Club and help us become a centre of excellence for skill building. The students are now gearing to do a bigger show for the Silver Jubilee of the School, and the sale proceeds will be a big support for the proposed Exhibition in New Delhi.

JBSF Girls Scholars

Ms. Katherine Allen (Advisor Fund Raising and International Relations) addressed the students in the assembly. She made the students aware of JBSF’s work in raising funds for our scholarships. She also told the students how they can apply for it.

School Photography Club clicked picture of all 92 girl students supported by JBSF with Ms. Katherine Allen.

Ms. Angela De Giacomo (co owner of Fedena), visited exhibitions together with Ms. Katherine Allen and her family. The guests  admired and appreciated the work of the students. They even bought some photos from the Photography Club.

Sports

Monday, 24th November: After interval a friendly, 12 over cricket match was played between Class XII V/s Classes XI, X and XI. Class XII was defeated by 1 run and 6 wickets.
Class XII made 88 runs with 8 wickets down; Class XII made 89 run with 5 wickets down.

Studies

Wednesday, 26th November: Students were given iron tablets as these have been sent by the Government to each school to keep iron deficiency at bay; in dearth of which many children suffer various diseases like anaemia.

Thursday, 27th November: Participants of Akhil Bhartiya Rashtrabhasha Hindi Competition were awarded gold medals and certificates. Sanju Chouhan/IX A with 85% and Sonaram Choudhary/VII B with 84% received gold medals while the rest of the students received trophies and certificates.

Friday, 28th November: School issued a notice to parents of Classes IX to XII to not send their wards on motorcycle to school, as School will not be responsible for any untoward incident with underage, non licensed drivers.

Saturday, 29th November: As students are gearing up for winter with the changing weather, they are also seen preparing for the forthcoming exams. From now on School will not observe Saturday as an Activity Day.

Math Global Olympiad Exam was organized by the Edu Talent Learning Organisation from Classes I to IX. 33 participants participated in this Olympiad.

Keynote Speaker Chief Guest Mr. Somik Ghosh’s Speech 

Mr. Sandeep Dutt, Chairman, Members of the trust, Member of Board of Governors, Members of Management Committee, the Principal, Staff, Parents and dear students. It is indeed an honour for me to stand here and to get an opportunity to share a few thoughts with all of you, but more importantly to get a chance, and unfortunately for a very short period of time to be with the children to see their work and be with the enthusiastic staff. But even in this field, as ours, one could easily sense a kind of excitement that is there, always in the school, which is growing in the right direction- an excitement of everyone wanting to contribute. This is very very rare! When it is there, it makes the right chemistry and I hope the school will always be blessed with it.


The importance really over here is a focus on local and global culture. The high quality education when it’s been given to you, through an English medium, with its fair balance of local language is absolutely outstanding!

And this is the right way to be able to connect with the world - a world in which today's children will definitely grow. They have right to go and grab opportunities with both hands! Somewhere, only on website, I saw the term ‘social mobility’. This term ‘social mobility’ needs to be carefully thought through. If by social mobility we are talking about going up and staying there ........this is not good! When you take leap to miss a step then there is a problem because you are denying one step while you take the next. I would suggest, let's look at this. I am sure, that is the philosophy of the school as well, social mobility, horizontally. Go spread out from the village to a district, district to a state, state to the country and country to the world. As far as you can reach- reach out! Keep up the spirit; be brave and you will reach at the top of your aspiration. As a banyan tree spreads its roots abroad in the same manner we will spread out too..

And as you students -  go forward and stretch out - make the circle bigger - meet more people - and bring them in your fold.

As the tree never forgets its center similarly please remember there is a center in your life. That perhaps is The Fabindia School; you are its branches! The school gives you a range of opportunities and the range of employment opportunities. Any good school can do this much for you! That it can give loads of opportunities to you. Generally students are made to sit in a class in a village. From morning to afternoon they sit with text books in their hands, doing doing whatever they have to within that book! But The Fabindia School, what I saw from the website, is actually giving you many, many opportunities to work with. This is so.... so very beautiful
It's a strong pride in a heritage! Don't lose it.

Social mobility does not mean we lose our heritage. Social mobility means we take our heritage; mix it with other cultures and make the best for the world. What we saw on the website - of course, photographs can always be posed. But what strikes you straight when you see the website are the very happy faces! Children smiling! Bright! Bright eyes!

I am sure I wasn't a wee bit disappointed, when I actually saw children today. They look happy. They are happy. I am sure they will contribute to a society with the wealth of happiness that they are taking from this very place.

It is important to interact. So as Mrs. Tandon requested, I will always welcome children from here. Teachers came to us last year. And now, we shall do it in a much more organised manner. I think teachers and children must come to us and stay with us for some time. We welcome the students to come and share our dormitories; and I will suggest to Mrs. Tandon to have exchanges. We have exchange programs usually for grown up children. Why don’t we, for a change, start the exchange with classes sixth and seventh because these are the dormitories that Mrs. Tandon knows very well. This is where she grew with her battery of her dogs and a poor husband. I am sure she is familiar with this environment and I think that’s where we should begin!

But jokes apart, I shall be failing in my duty if I didn’t give away a little bit of our Mrs. Tandon. All through my Founder’s I saw someone on whom I could totally depend upon for organising the Founder’s Day Program; keeping the Founder’s Day Program running like a clock-work. I would make mistakes and I would get a stern look and I would make sure that on the final day I won’t make that mistake!

But what I never forget about her is – there was a boy in Class XII, who would only play basketball and do well in studies. At a rare conversation with him I found out that he had a wonderful voice and a very fine diction. So, I wanted to put him in the school play. He would refuse it straight away. He would just not come for the rehearsals, till I told Deepika, if there is something that she could do! She said “Done. Leave him to me”. And there she cajoled him, scolded him and made sure that the boy did his role so well and afterwards he came and thanked her and gave her a big hug. So this is the quality of a teacher. I am not saying this because she is your Principal but these are the things which in a boarding school or schools with involvement like yours really matter a great deal.

The balanced mix of service and activity and I had these points noted before I had heard the Principal’s report – your calendar does look exciting. The calendar has a promise of something that is going to happen tomorrow and it has a very strong promise of something very exciting happening tomorrow and day after and day after that.

Now, for the students, I’ll narrate a very short story. Once in China a boy came to know that he won’t inherit his father’s property. He leaves his home in anger and goes to the ironsmith to learn some skills. Then he goes to a carpenter to learn further. And he becomes a wonderful craftman! So with this confidence he goes to a goldsmith to ask for work. But the goldsmith refuses saying that one who works with a hammer will spoil his work, so best he goes back to the carpenter. But this fellow did not give up and he went back to the goldsmith and learnt his skill too. After which he never got a chance to look back. He had to do it himself. You all have The Fabindia School, which in my knowledge is the only school of its kind to teach you many skills. Please learn whatever you can, for whatever you learn comes handy one day in your day to day life. You never know when you would have need of them and then you would regret that you never learnt it in school time! I had done Photography at school. I never could believe that it will be so useful in teaching Physics.

But at the same time, at the end of the day, it is the values; the acceptance of people; the sympathy for people – that’s what you will carry out into the world with you. Tomorrow if I meet The Fabindia School students, we will just see one thing. “Is he considerate?” “Does he have a heart?” “Is he responsible?” “Does he give other person a chance before he grabs it for himself?” That’s what happens after school. And I am sure all these wonderful people are well worth it.

In this context, I say one thing, take any tree that grows in this soil; we can plant it somewhere; the tree will perhaps grow anywhere. It will live. It will survive. But it will not live to give good fruits. So, we must understand that whatever is our heritage, we must never forget it. It is like out tree trunk. It must remain where it was planted. From the top we should spread out as leaves; spread out as much as you can. Like in a tree so many birds come and sit in so many branches, so keep yourself open to nesting of many birds. Let little fruits be there, where you belong; where your family belongs.

There’s another wonderful thing that we sense over here and that is the parents school partnership. In today’s world, all over, they are going for this parent-school partnership. Many days ago in Mumbai, in a Sanctuary magazine I saw a Rajasthan teacher had got an award for only one thing that she had ever done - written a song herself! She got her students to sing it. She went from village to village with her children to sing this song, only to bring awareness to save the river dolphin. That no one should kill it. And protect the Ranthambore tigers. This message was given from a school! School children gave this message for poachers who kill tigers and sell them. These children fought against that. This teacher and this song is an inspiration. This inspiration came from a small village of Rajasthan and not from any big city like, Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata. So what happens here, Rabindar Nath Tagore, Gandhi ji, Vinoba Bhave all have said to return to one’s soil because in this environment we form a relationship with nature. In Bengal they call a tiger a “Mama”; they call a cat a “Mausi”. This kind of warmth is not there in the tall buildings of Gurgaon.
We have all risen high above the ground. This should not happen.

So these are the little thoughts. I think I should not take any more of your time. I just thought that I should share these things with you. I wish you all the best. We will be keenly following the progress of this school, and wish all the success in whatever endeavour your school makes to bring up wonderful citizens of the world for tomorrow.

All of you will go into the world, all will take up some subject and work in that area throughout your life. I have seen this promise in your exhibitions; some photographers; some scientists some geographers but we will hope that wherever students pass out and go in the coming years. You already have a history of 22 years and I hope there is one student at least who goes out into the world and wishes to make at least five Fabindia School in five different villages.
